During his career, Bloomer was a prolific goalscorer for both club and country. A quick-thinking forward, he was able to shoot powerfully and accurately with either foot and his speciality was the daisy cutter– a low shot, hit with great power, speed and accuracy. In 535 First Division games he scored 314 goals and, after Jimmy Greaves, he is the second-highest all-time goalscorer in the top-flight of English football.
This is an original print from the 1895 publication Famous Footballers which typically sells for over £1,000. In excellent condition
Text says:
BORN at Cradley, near Birmingham, in 1874, S. BLOOMER first became associated with Derby County five or six years ago. He was then playing for the Reserves, and it was not until 1892 that a vacancy in the League. Team gave him the chance of a trial in Derby County's best Eleven. His place was at once assured, and has never since been in doubt. So well did he play in the early part of last season that he wa selected to represent England against Ireland, and here too he acquitted himself so creditably that he was further promoted to a place in the English Team against Scotland, the highest honour open to an English footballer. In this last match he showed to great advantage on the inside right with BASSETT, and in this position has few superiors. Though a clever dribbler he also passes with great judgment, and is in addition also a pretty safe shot.
