1909 Carlisle United Team Postcard
From shopfront sales to the lads in blue ⚽💙
This survivor from c.1909–1911 tell a story of Carlisle at the turn of the Edwardian era:
• Nicholson & Cartner’s Lochinvar postcards — urgent typography shouting about “GOODS ALMOST GIVEN AWAY!” as they moved shop to Castle Street.
• Their Lochinvar branding, inspired by Sir Walter Scott’s gallant rider, stamped across every card.
• And my favourite: Carlisle United’s early team photo, “The Lads in Blue at Half Time,” flat caps and all — a glimpse of football culture before the club ever joined the Football League.
More than just paper — these are fragments of local identity, football heritage, and Edwardian marketing genius.
